Chosen Materials

The raw materials in BUAN products are carefully chosen with consideration of the mission statement and core values. The materials are the single most important ingredient to ensure quality to last a lifetime. Everything BUAN sources, from full grain leather to salvaged tyre tubs, comes with a tale to tell. Which is why BUAN embraces the idea that nothing is wasted. Which is why nothing is wasted.

BUAN uses the finest quality leather available, a variety of different types and thicknesses are chosen for specific products. Most commonly used in BUAN’s products is premium full-grain vegetable tanned leather which is the toughest kind of leather and has the most character. Full grain leather is known for its durability, tighter grain, and its resistance to moisture. This type of leather preserves the outermost (and strongest) layer of the hide and preserves natural and unique markings. BUAN embraces these imperfections on the hides through quality, keeping each product uniquely crafted.

Vegetable Tan is chemical-free produced leather that is given its colour through a natural process using natural tannins in tree bark and leaves. This tanning process generally takes between 30-60 days. Vegetable Tanned leather is famous for its remarkable aging process known as patina. Leather is a gift from nature and I choose to honour its beauty in my work.

Beautiful hardware such as buckles, studs and rivets can make all the difference in the styling of a belt or a bag. I love brass and gold because it looks great against the brown and black coloured leathers, and adds a touch of elegance. Brass hardware was also chosen for its incredible strength and durable properties. Brass is much like leather in the way it will age beautifully and patina with use.
